One of those commercials that you don’t forget.

A walk through ad-time
These old commercials takes you through time and while watching them it slowly becomes obvious that it is not only technology that has changed since the 50s, but also our ideals and advertisement environment.
“There’s nothing like an ice-cold Coca-Cola.”
When war apparently was a toy…
The jolly 70s. This song will be stuck inside your head for a while.
This must have been so hyped in the early 80s. And today we can feel happy that product development has taken us far since this.
Inspiration
One of the most popular trends spotted in today’s commercials is the imaginative borrowing from our beloved pop culture. The most obvious example is this Warholdish advertisement from Pepsi. By borrowing a style the consumers are already familiar with and like they give themselves an instant heads-up. However, you can’t imagine that this borrowing was bought cheap.
This trend is even more obvious in the commercials for tv, where companies tend to borrow ideas from the red-hot internet culture, perhaps aiming to get the youths attention. One great example of this is a commercial which I remember as a great success. It is for the swedish telecom company ComHem and was one of those few commercials that were discussed among teens and passed around on different social media sites.
The video is basically a summary of some of the YouTube-videos that during that year got a lot of attention in Sweden and abroad. Since this video ComHem has made many spin-offs on the same theme. The best ones, according to me, are found below.
Original video: Twin Talking Babies. Added to YouTube in 2011 and viewed over 64,000,000 times.
Original video: The OMG cat. Added to YouTube in 2010 and viewed over 15,000,000 times.
Last, but not least, I have to mention one of last year’s biggest commercials. The Volkswagen Game Day commercial with the suiting name The Dark Force. The Game Day commercials are widely known for being some of the best and most expensive of the year and this was definitely the big one of 2011. With more than 51,000,000 views Volkswagen really boosted their brand.
And then there is confidence…

Surely Apple has worked with their brands image since this old commercial. From struggling to be associated with great minds to becoming an icon more commonly known than some of the names in this forgotten commercial
Diversification
In a global economy where you can buy more than a hundred types of toothpaste it is hard to differentiate your specific brand. Toyota gives it a try and apparently people thought they succeeded. This commercial received a warm welcome and built further on Toyotas image as the car brand where the actual production is an human craftsmanship.

Sometimes it is all about product development, but this might be to take it one step to far…

We are hosting a lunch lecture with global social media manager at Björn Bjorg Micke Kazarnowicz on the topic “Is your brand an aging rock star or a popular cocktail party goer?”. Afterwards we’ll be serving some mulled wine (glögg) and, of course, christmas presents.
